What is Battle of the Books?

Battle of the Books is a contest where students face off based on their knowledge of chosen books. This competition aims to enhance literacy within the Montour School District.

Who may participate?

Middle Schoolers (5th & 6th, and 7th & 8th graders) are invited to take part in the Battle of the Books. Students should form their own teams. Each team SHOULD include five OR FEWER members, an adult team manager, and a unique team name. All STUDENT members will compete in the event, and a student may only join one team.

Registration

All teams must complete their registration by January 13th, 2025. The book list will be emailed to the team manager by January 17th, 2025.

How to Prepare:

All students are encouraged to read all the battle books.

Meet up as a team to practice and quiz each other with book questions.

Team Manager: read the books along with your team and help formulate practice questions.

What does a team manager do?

The adult team manager can be a parent, teacher, relative, or any individual over the age of 18 who acts as the liaison between the team and the Robinson Public Library. Responsibilities of the team manager include:

  • Completing and submitting the registration form to the library

  • Keeping team members motivated

  • Organizing transportation to and from the Battle of the Books Tournament

  • Holding/setting up practice sessions for team to prepare

  • Additionally, team managers may be asked to assist during the tournament.

What is the procedure for the Battle?

Teams will be asked to arrive 30 minutes before the battle is set to begin. Every team will be arranged in a circle. Once the moderator poses a question, each team will have 30 seconds to discuss and agree on their answer. The team captain will then record the answer on the provided paper. Answers must be thorough and precise. Teams will earn 4 points for a correct response and receive 1 point if they include the author's last name; spelling is important. Additionally, each team will have the opportunity to challenge up to one question and/or answer.

Registry deadline: January 13th, 2025
